Answers to Your Questions

FAQs

Minimising the impact of loadshedding for a start! Keeping your business or home going when power goes off, is not the only benefit of a solar system. Solar systems reduce the cost of your electricity bill and naturally increases the value of your property compared to Eskom dependant property. Long term your property will sell quicker or leas easily; particularly given the current context of load shedding and rising electricity costs.

Your cost will depend on the options you choose and the size of the system.

Grid-tied systems produce energy when you have enough sunlight to generate power but will also draw power from the grid when your system is not generating enough power. This is the cheapest option, because it excludes the most expensive component of a solar power system – the batteries.

Hybrid systems

can produce and store electricity. A hybrid system adds battery storage between the solar panels and your inverter – which means you can maximise consumption of the power generated from the panels. This option is more expensive, as the cost increases as you add batteries to the system.

Off-grid systems

require more solar panels, high-capacity battery storage and often a backup generator to ensure access to electricity at all times. While it can mean living off-the grid and becoming self-sufficient, off-grid systems are the most expensive option.

The two primary aspects of maintaining a solar system are to regularly monitor your system’s performance through the data logger and periodic light cleaning of your panels to make sure dirt, leaves, and other debris aren’t obstructing the sun’s rays.

Beyond this, it is advisable to have us conduct yearly visits just to check the general health of your system.

When it comes to renewable energy, South Africa has two tax incentive programmes: One for individuals and their private residences and one for business owners.

Individuals will be able to claim a rebate to the value of 25% of the cost of new and unused solar photovoltaic (PV) panels, up to a maximum of R15 000 per individual.

Under the draft legislation, businesses qualify for a 125% tax deduction on capital expenses for all renewable energy projects which generate electricity from solar PV energy.

Unless you are fully off-grid grid and have enough back-up power to remain completely off-grid, you will still pay for electricity, however but your bills can be reduced dramatically with the right solution to match your energy needs.

Your solar panels still generate electricity during cloudy weather. But they are most efficient when it’s sunny. Solar installations do not stop working after sunset.

Yes, they do require sunlight to produce electricity or energy. In technical terms, they absorb photovoltaic energy (PV) and convert it into direct current (DC) power. A system inverter helps DC convert in alternating current (AC) power. At night, they continue to run, thanks to net metering and storage technology. Either you connect them to a grid or a battery and enjoy sustainable energy all day long.

Being off-grid means you are not connected in any way to your grid’s power system or Eskom. This is appealing because you are 100% self-sustaining your energy use. You are completely reliant on the sun and energy stored in batteries to power your home or business and may need to add a generator.

Buying a solar system is the best way to save money long-term. It may increase the value of your home, given the increased demand, making it more attractive to a potential buyer. However, a PPA solar solution only makes sense if you foresee yourself remaining in your home until the end of the typical 3 to 7 year agreement period and may be better if you want to get started with solar without a large initial investment.
